PowerEdge Update, brought to you by Roberto Cordaro

April 27th, 2009

This is the second installment of Nuvera’s CEO’s series on PowerEdge and fuel cells for material handling.  The first installment can be found here.

Greetings,

The preparation work to start production of PowerEdge in Billerica this summer progresses on schedule. Nuvera will then be fulfilling Total Power Solution orders to commercial customers utilizing its new quality management system.

In the meantime I have some news I believe is of interest to you. We have last week eclipsed 20,000 hours of fleet operation. Our fuel cell units deployed on February 10, 2009 at Defense Logistics Agency have logged over 3,500 hrs.

As I mentioned before, fuel cell products for forklift trucks are mostly about productivity gains for the customer. I have previously discussed the PowerEdge advantage of combining fuel cell with battery technology to provide higher power available for 30 seconds while lifting. Today, I would like to highlight out the advantage of PowerEdge’s quick refueling – 2 minutes or less. This feature is very important in optimizing customer’s operations as a typical battery change out takes 15-20 minutes, with more sophisticated, albeit expensive systems getting the change out to as low as 4 minutes.

Nuvera’s solution is based on 2 elements: (1) PowerEdge is built with steel tanks capable of safe and fast refueling while quickly dissipating the heat generated by hydrogen compression, and (2) the PowerTap Hydrogen Station’s fast refill (500 g/min) setting when refueling PowerEdge.

Higher sustained lifting power and faster refueling are important factors in productivity gains on the floor of the warehouse/factory.

As always, I would love to hear from you.

Best,

Roberto
