Nuvera Awarded Federal Grant for First Hydrogen Fuel Cell Bus Demonstration in Massachusetts

Nuvera was awarded a $4.875 million grant from the Federal Transit Authority (FTA) for a hydrogen fuel cell bus and refueling demonstration project at Logan International Airport.

CAMBRIDGE, MA, October 16, 2006 – Nuvera Fuel Cells, Inc. announced today that through the Northeast Advanced Vehicle Consortium (NAVC) it was awarded a $4.875 million grant from the Federal Transit Authority (FTA) for a hydrogen fuel cell bus and refueling demonstration project at Logan International Airport. This project will be the first fuel cell bus demonstration in Massachusetts and is part of the National Fuel Cell Bus Program.

Nuvera will be providing one 82 kW HDL-82 fuel cell power module, which will be integrated into a Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) shuttle bus, scheduled for in-service operation. Additionally, Nuvera is providing a PowertapTM hydrogen generation system to provide an on-site hydrogen infrastructure to the fuel cell bus. This will be the first hydrogen refueling station in the state of Massachusetts, and the second in New England.

“By funding this program, Congress has allowed the transit industry to continue its long tradition as an innovator in the areas of alternative fuels and technology,” said FTA Administrator James Simpson. “Through this national program, we can consolidate—and accelerate—the process of making hydrogen buses commercially feasible as cleaner, more energy efficient alternatives."

Nuvera received unwavering support on this project from Congressman Michael Capuano and Congressman Marty Meehan of Massachusetts. “We would like to thank Congressman Capuano and Congressman Meehan for supporting Nuvera through this competitive bidding process,” commented Bill Mitchell, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Nuvera. “By bringing the first ever fuel cell vehicle demonstration to the Commonwealth we are committed to helping Massachusetts maintain its position as a leader in alternative energy.”

Other partners in this project include Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA), ISE Corporation, Keyspan and AVSG.
