Forza: Forza is Nuvera’s industrial power generation system, based on the proven HDS 900 fuel cell stack, engineered as a 250 kW building block designed for scalability. Forza was developed to recover energy for the chlor alkali industry, which produces 189 tons of by-product hydrogen every hour. A customer site demonstration was carried out in Italy at a Caffaro chlorate plant, and the system logged over 185,000 kW hours at greater than 95% availability prior to being decommissioned. As a rugged and durable system, Forza was also used in heavy duty transit rail applications, powering the first fuel cell powered train in Japan in 2006.
Feedstock: Hydrogen
DC Power Output : scalable from 250 kW to several MW
Efficiency: 56% average over life
Star: The Star™ fuel processor, developed in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Energy, utilizes advanced catalysts developed by Nuvera and its catalyst partners. A revolutionary technology in both size and operation, Star is a vehicular onboard fuel processor that generates hydrogen on demand. Star relies on Nuvera’s proprietary autothermal reforming technology, and is one of the only systems in the world capable of converting virtually any hydrocarbon fuel into fuel cell grade hydrogen. Laboratory testing was carried out in conjunction with Renault, a leading automaker.
Feedstock: Gasoline, natural gas, propane, methanol, diesel, JP-8, jet fuel, ethanol and bio diesel
Efficiency: 80%
Power Density: 1 kW/L
Max Fuel Input: 200 kWth (LHV)
Avanti: Nuvera successfully completed testing of its 3rd generation Avanti combined heat and power (CHP) system at the end of 2008. Having placed multiple units in the field in both the U.S. and Asia, Nuvera decided that the product will not be brought to market in the near future as it was deemed not cost competitive in today’s energy market. Avanti integrates two key components of a fuel cell system - the fuel processor and a PEM fuel cell stack - into a single product, which allows this power system to use natural gas or propane as the primary fuel source and generate clean, efficient energy and heat.
Feed Stock: Natural gas or propane
AC Power Output: 5 kW
Thermal Energy: 7 kW
AC electric efficiency, HHV: 34%
Cogen (hot water) efficiency, HHV: 55%
Total CHP efficiency, HHV: 89%
