Nuvera Demonstrates Electrochemical Hydrogen Compressor for Premiere Fueling Event

PRESS RELEASE: Billerica, Massachusetts, October 06, 2016 — Nuvera Fuel Cells, LLC, a provider of fuel cell power and hydrogen solutions for motive applications, has successfully demonstrated fueling of a fuel cell vehicle (FCV) with hydrogen compressed electrochemically. Electrochemical compression represents a potential paradigm-shift for the hydrogen and fuel cell industry and promises to enable broader adoption of fuel cell powered cars and other vehicles.

The project received support from InnovateMass, a program administered by the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center (MassCEC) to address important energy challenges, help grow the state’s clean energy economy, and contribute to Massachusetts’s continued clean energy leadership. “This funding helps drive innovation in the Commonwealth,” said MassCEC Interim CEO Stephen Pike. “Through our InnovateMass program we are able to help companies like Nuvera bridge the commercialization ‘valley of death’, leading to inventive clean energy solutions and future market opportunities.”

Nuvera’s electrochemical hydrogen compressor (EHC) offers many benefits compared to today’s mechanical compressors. “Hydrogen-powered electric vehicles offer consumers the convenience of gasoline with the environmental impact of electricity,” points out Scott Blanchet, Chief Development Officer at Nuvera. “Storing hydrogen as a compressed gas enables this convenience, but the cost, maintenance, size and noise of compressors available today are really the Achilles heel limiting the growth of the industry.” Blanchet suggests that “removing these constraints, with electrochemical compression, will allow hydrogen to be deployed economically at the scale necessary to benefit our society.”

The fueling event culminated by filling a Hyundai 2016 Tucson Fuel Cell, the first mass-produced fuel cell vehicle in the U.S. market. The EHC delivered high pressure hydrogen to Nuvera’s on-site fueling station, which was then dispensed to the FCV. The Tucson Fuel Cell was then taken for a celebratory drive.
