Nuvera works with leading aerospace companies to make air travel cleaner and more efficient. Hydrogen fuel cells can increase efficiency by eliminating the need to run the engines when aircraft are on the ground, and by reducing the power drain normally imposed on the engines by non-propulsion systems during flight. Powering cabin lights, entertainment systems and environmental controls with Nuvera® Fuel Cell Engines could save jet fuel and reduce pollution and carbon emissions.
Fuel cell cars use electric motors for propulsion, which makes for quiet, smooth acceleration. Fuel cell cars offer convenience coupled with high performance. A hydrogen fuel tank can be filled in minutes at a station much like any gas-powered car today. Fuel cell cars can drive hundreds of miles on a single tank, so drivers do not need to change their driving habits or expectations. Fuel cell cars perform well in all weather conditions, from hot summers to icy winters, and handle as well or better than today’s best-performing cars. Lastly, fuel cell cars emit nothing but water vapor, helping to improve local air quality.
Together with Hyster and Yale, Nuvera is developing the next generation of high-efficiency fuel cell power systems for forklift trucks. This zero emission power source for electric lift trucks is a high-productivity alternative to lead acid batteries: Quickly and conveniently refueled, easily installed, and eliminating the need for battery handling, charging and swapping.
The same Nuvera® fuel cell system used in forklift trucks can be used in other industrial vehicles, such as ground support equipment. Mining vehicles and ice resurfacers are among the many types of equipment Nuvera fuel cells have already powered.
Many forms of rail vehicles can use Nuvera® Fuel Cell Engines to power traction motors and/or auxiliaries, including passenger, freight, and light rail, rapid transit, mining locomotives, and trams. Among the rail applications powered by Nuvera fuel cells is a locomotive operated by Japan’s Railway Technical Research Institute and a mining locomotive.
Quiet operation and zero-emissions from medium-duty trucks and from on-board auxiliary power units for refrigeration could mean that delivery and grocery trucks will be able to make deliveries at any time of day, without creating noise in the neighborhoods they serve or adversely affecting air quality.
