One of the largest and most innovative cooperative education programs in the world has recognized its co-op employer of the year. Nuvera Fuel Cells (a subsidiary of the Hyster-Yale Group) has been a major employer partner for Chemical Engineering students at Northeastern University since 2006, and has hired a total of 49 co-op students at its Massachusetts headquarters. As a leader in the development of fuel processing and fuel cell technology, Nuvera offers students the opportunity to work as engineering co-ops in the Electrochemical Technology Group and Process Engineering Group. Here, they support Fuel Cell Platform and Hydrogen Generation Teams to design, test, and manufacture state-of-the art products.

The second annual Department of Chemical Engineering Award for Employer of the Year was presented to Nuvera on July 19 by chemical engineering co-op coordinators on behalf of Northeastern University’s College of Engineering. Cynthia Fontano, Nuvera’s Sr. Human Resources Generalist, and Nuvera co-op engineering supervisors Grace Hall, Ashish Khandeparker, and Pat Burand (pictured below right to left) received the award from Assistant co-op coordinator, Sarah Kostanksit. Co-op coordinator Max Sederer, and assistant co-op coordinator Jake Walker (pictured below flanking the group left and right respectively), further shared the appreciation of Northeastern. The selection for the award was based on outstanding contribution to the careers of chemical engineers at Northeastern.

“Our students are provided with an excellent opportunity to learn and contribute to such an exciting field,” said Sarah Kostanski, “and we are happy to recognize the mentorship and guidance that Nuvera provides as a committed co-op employer partner.”

The ChE Co-op is an educational program within the Northeastern Department of Chemical Engineering in which students alternate periods of academic study in the classroom with periods of full-time co-op employment in positions related to their academic and/or career interests. This combination provides an integrated learning experience that enhances both the academic experience and career development — Northeastern’s co-op advantage. Review additional FAQs at
